On Wednesday, the government declared that Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee National Institution of Water and Sanitation has been renamed the National Centre for Drinking Water, Sanitation and Quality (NCDWQ) in Kolkata.
At a meeting presided over by Prime Minister NarendraModi, the Union Cabinet gave ex-post facto approval for the proposal to rename an institute that was established on 8.72 acres in Joka, Diamond Harbour Road and Kolkata.
Last month, the Prime Minister inaugurated this institute.
It is envisioned as a leading institute for the development of capacities in States and Union Territories in the fields of public health engineering and drinking water sanitation and hygiene through training programmes.
These capacities are not only for frontline workers involved in the implementation of the Swachh Bharat Mission or the Jal Jeevan Mission but also for representatives of rural and urban bodies, according to an official statement.
A suitable infrastructure was therefore developed. This includes a research and development block, residential complex, and training infrastructure.
To facilitate training at the institute, miniature and working models of Water Sanitation and Hygiene technologies (WASH) are also available.
Jana Sangh founder Mookerjee was a pioneer in national integration, inspiration to industrialisation, a distinguished scholar, and the youngest vice-chancellor of the University of Calcutta.
