Two days after winning the FIFA World Cup 2022 Argentina, football star Messi set another record. A carousel of photos commemorating the victory has since eclipsed all other posts on Instagram.
An image of an egg was the previous most liked Instagram photo. It received nearly 56 million likes. Chris Godfrey shared the image of the egg in January 2019 as a social experiment.
Messi’s post celebrating winning the World Cup has taken over. According to the Olympics website, the photo of the Argentinian football icon also gained 50 million social media likes.
“World Champions! It was something I had hoped for so many times that I can’t even believe it. Lionel Messi expressed gratitude to his family and to everyone who supported me.
“We have proven once again that Argentines can achieve what they set out to do when we work together and fight together. This group is worthy of the merit. It is not individuality that is important. It is the collective strength of all Argentines fighting for the same dream. We achieved it! He added.
Lionel Messi, seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, is only the second person with more than 400,000,000 Instagram followers. He had 376 million Instagram followers before the FIFA World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo is a rival to Messi and currently has 519 million Instagram fans, making him the most popular user on the platform. Two legendary football players were seen together playing chess in a recent photo. It was the most liked Instagram post by an athlete, with almost 40 million likes Monday.
Instagram’s most popular posts feature Lionel Messi (and Cristiano Ronaldo) as the main characters. Seven of the top nine Instagram posts feature Messi and Ronaldo. All seven posts were uploaded between 2021-2022.
