North and South Korea fire missiles off each other’s coasts for first time – Read Full Detail !

South Korea and North Korea launched missiles that landed in waters near each other’s coastlines for the first-ever time.

Three hours after Pyongyang fired a missile, Seoul responded by launching a counterattack on Wednesday. The missile landed less that 60km (37mi), off Sokcho in the South.

This was said by the South’s military as an “unacceptable” violation of its territory.

Three air-to-ground missiles were fired in response. Officials said they landed at a similar distance to the Northern Limit Line (NLL).

Although the demarcation line marks the rough middle-point of the sea between North Korea and South Korea, the North has never accepted it.

On Tuesday, North Korea threatened that the US and South Korea would pay “the worst price in history” for continuing joint military drills. This was a threat to use nuclear weapons.

After a five year break, the North is expected to resume testing nuclear weapons soon. South Korean intelligence has confirmed that Pyongyang has made all necessary preparations.

After the massacre in Seoul last weekend, which claimed more than 150 lives, the tit-for–tat missile launches are occurring during a time of national mourning.

According to South Korean officials, North Korea fired at most 10 missiles in east and west directions Wednesday, they claim.

One of the North Korean missiles, at least one, was launched prior to 09:00 GMT (03:00 GMT) Wednesday. It landed approximately 26km south-east of the border, 57km east Sokcho island and 167km north of Ulleung island.

It set off air-raid sirens at Ulleung, prompting residents to flee to underground shelters.

South Korean and Japanese authorities immediately seized the launch, who quickly condemned Pyongyang’s escalated behavior.

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk-yeol called it an “effective territory invasion”, even though the missile was not within South Korean territorial waters. He promised a “swift, firm response”.

International law states that countries cannot claim territory beyond 12 nautical miles from the sea bordering their land. It is Mr Yoon’s policy to be tough on North Korea.

Three hours later, three precision air to ground missiles were fired by the South from warplanes into waters just off North Korea’s east coastline.

These firings represent a significant escalation of hostilities on the peninsula this year. The peninsula has already seen over 50 missile launches by North Korea, including one ballistic missile which passed over Japan.

As part of joint US-South Korean drills that began in August, a US nuclear-powered sub arrived off the South Korean coast on Monday.
