Russia said Wednesday that avoiding a conflict between the world’s nukes was its number one priority in the ongoing war against Ukraine. However, it accused the West of encouraging provocations using weapons of mass destruction.
“We are convinced that in the current complex and turbulent situation caused by irresponsible, impudent acts aimed at undermining national security, it is essential to avoid any military clash with nuclear powers,” the foreign ministry of the country stated in a statement.
Russia said that it was concerned about the five nuclear powers declared by Russia and warned that the West should stop encouraging provocations with weapons mass destruction. This could lead to devastating consequences.
Moscow also reiterated its support for the January joint declaration with the United States of America, China, Britain and France “on the prevention and avoidance of nuclear war” and “on the avoidance and the avoidance an arms race starting from Jan. 3, 2022.”
Russia has sought to downplay the narrative of a nuclear attack in the wake West-led accusations. Last month, President Vladimir Putin stated that he did not intend to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Putin stated, “We don’t see the need for that.” It is neither politically nor militarily unnecessary.
Putin stated that Russia would use “all available means” to protect its territory in September. These remarks were interpreted by the West as threats of using nuclear weapons to defend Ukraine’s annexations.
He said that the United States had also created a precedent at the end of World War II when it dropped two nuclear bombs on Japan.
