Becquart was quoted by a news report about invalid ordinations in America of Catholic women wearing liturgical vestments. One woman said: “Excommunication was just one part of the journey.”
Becquart responded to the subject by saying: “It’s more than a matter of whether you feel called to priesthood. It’s always about recognizing that the Church will call your to be a priest.” Your personal decision or feeling is not sufficient.
She stated, “I believe we need to expand our vision of Christ.” There are many, many opportunities for women to serve in the Church.
According to the October synod document, many reports were submitted asking for discernment on “the possibility of women with adequate training to preach within parish settings and a female priestate.”
The working document for the Continental Phase stated that there was a greater variety of opinions on the topic of priestly ordination of women. Some reports require it, but others view it as a closed matter.
Pope Francis also spoke recently about women’s ordination in an interview with America Magazine.
