by Agence France-Presse: On Friday, two years after the brutal assault on the US Capitol in which dozens of people were killed, President Joe Biden stated that America is “no place for” political violence. He also honored the police officers who stood up to the mob of Donald Trump supporters.
The somber White House ceremony was held as a group of congressional Republicans, including some who back Trump’s false claim of fraudulent 2020 election results, kept the US House of Representatives locked in limbo and repeatedly blocked the election of a speaker.
Biden stated in a speech that “despite our differences in opinions, we must clearly say with a united voice…there’s no place in America for voter intimidation…for political violence.”
He presented 14 Presidential Citizens Medals to the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, the Country’s Second-Highest Civil Honour, to the Capitol police officers on January 6, 2021.
Biden said to the honorees that history will remember their names. He also spoke of the many people who are well-known nationwide for their activism after the attack and their appearances during the televised congressional investigation into it.
Some medal recipients were elected officials or poll workers from states where Trump and his allies tried to stop Biden’s win being certified.
Biden stated that America is a country of laws, not chaos.
Three awards were posthumously given to officers who responded to the attack. Two of them committed suicide following the riots and one was awarded to Brian Sicknick who suffered a stroke the next day.
On Thursday, Sicknick’s girlfriend filed suit against two men who pleaded guilty already to Capitol assault-related offenses. She also sued Trump, whom she claims was intently inflaming his supporters and encouraging them attack.
